Lower test scores from wildfire smoke exposure

چکیده
Wildfires have increased in frequency and severity over the past two decades, threatening to undo substantial air quality improvements. We investigate relationship between wildfire smoke exposure learning outcomes across United States using standardized test scores from 2009–2016 for nearly 11,700 school districts satellite-derived estimates of daily exposure. Relative a year with no smoke, average cumulative smoke-attributable PM2.5 (surface particulate matter <2.5 μg m−3) during (~35 reduces by ~0.15% standard deviation. These impacts are more pronounced among younger students observed differing levels economic disadvantage racial/ethnic composition. Additionally, we project that 2016 reduced discounted future earnings $1.7 billion ($111 per student). Roughly 80% these costs borne disadvantaged districts. Our findings quantify previously unaccounted social cost is likely worsen under warming climate. Wildfire increases worsening many regions, undoing gains pollution control. This study finds States, fine particulates worsened scores, especially students, most

Critical Review of Health Impacts of Wildfire Smoke Exposure
BACKGROUND Wildfire activity is predicted to increase in many parts of the world due to changes in temperature and precipitation patterns from global climate change. Wildfire smoke contains numerous hazardous air pollutants and many studies have documented population health effects from this exposure. OBJECTIVES We aimed to assess the evidence of health effects from exposure to wildfire smoke...
متن کاملWildfire smoke injection heights: Two perspectives from space
[1] The elevation at which wildfire smoke is injected into the atmosphere has a strong influence on how the smoke is dispersed, and is a key input to aerosol transport models. Aerosol layer height is derived with great precision from space-borne lidar, but horizontal sampling is very poor on a global basis. Aerosol height derived from space-borne stereo imaging is limited to source plumes havin...
متن کاملNon-Accidental Health Impacts of Wildfire Smoke
Wildfires take a heavy toll on human health worldwide. Climate change may increase the risk of wildfire frequency. Therefore, in view of adapted preventive actions, there is an urgent need to further understand the health effects and public awareness of wildfires. We conducted a systematic review of non-accidental health impacts of wildfire and incorporated lessons learned from recent experienc...
متن کاملWildfire Emission Modeling: Integrating BlueSky and SMOKE
Atmospheric chemical transport models are used to simulate historic meteorological episodes for developing air quality management strategies. Wildland fire emissions need to be characterized accurately to achieve these air quality management goals. The temporal and spatial estimates of emissions from fires, both wild and prescribed, have been problematic primarily because of uncertainty in the ...
متن کاملFunctional correlates of lower cognitive test scores in essential tremor.
Although motor features have been the defining element of essential tremor (ET), lower neurocognitive test scores are increasingly being recognized. However, the clinical correlates, if any, of these lower test scores remain largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to determine whether cognitive test scores in ET have any functional correlates. The Modified Mini Mental Status Examination (...
